Overdyed

While traditional rugs' patterns and colors remain an exquisite insight into local craftsmanship, some may feel their timeless styles do not fit into contemporary interior designs. By adding a vibrant splash of color, while still exuding the timeless class of an original handcrafted piece of art, overdyed rugs not only give a new lease of life to an aged carpet but also contributes to a sustainable practice.

Depending on the desired finish, different methods are used.

1) Some rugs are first sheared to even out the pile and give them a distress and faded look. The carpet then undergoes a series of chemical washes (depending on the desired result) or natural sun bleaching to neutralize and remove the color. These processes do not remove the pattern but reduce it to an outline, creating a foundation for dyeing. 

2) The carpets can then be dyed in one color; this process can be repeated multiple times to achieve the desired saturation level and hue. The process can result in lighter background shades, a multi-tonal rug, or a solid fill throughout. Most over-dyed rugs will display several different shades, which brings a certain vitality back to the carpet, resulting from the uneven surfaces and original pattern.
